  1. Ouch!! So sorry to hear about this disaster. I have been curious about AlphaSmarts, but this cools my incipient ardor considerably.

    Type on.

    1. The AlphaSmart Dana is a newer model. It's a PalmOS-based device, and that's the one I loat data on. I also have an older model, the AlphaSmart 3000. I know for a fact that you can take the batteries out of that one without losing data, because it automatically saves everything as you type it. But I don't care to risk anymore heartbreak, and I'm just putting all my toys away for good.

  2. Oh, I've been there. Lost an entire watch write-up and a Bond fan fiction in one fell swoop. Wouldn't have happened with a typewriter.
The good thing with writing by hand or typewriter and then transcribing into computer is that you get the chance to edit as you re-write.

    1. True. It's an extra draft that will help clean up the careless mistakes I sometimes don't catch while writing on a computer.

  3. We've all been there. Some of us learn, others don't. Typescript-to-pc: OCR could save you some leg work when the time comes.

  4. I tried an AlphaSmart and it was lovely until the day I took it outside. It was a bright sunny day, but something in the air scared it, I guess, and forever after that it only showed gibberish.

    1. I understand they're not made for that, and their best use is probably in schools. I prefer to just not risk any further loss of data, and may just give them to small children to play with.

    2. So now, like the Scarecrow, you are only afraid of fire. :)
